James Talarico walked into a Fox News interview apparently hoping to polish his image for a Texas Senate campaign.

Instead, the Democrat found himself retreating from the progressive positions that helped define his political record, and the surrender came quickly once basic questions arrived.

The appearance was either a bold attempt to reach voters outside the usual liberal bubble or a spectacular strategic blunder.

When the discussion moved toward sex, gender, and girls sports, the “Six gender” candidate discovered that friendly slogans sound different when a skeptical interviewer asks for straight answers.

One supposed “trick question” involved the number of sexes.

This should have been the easiest question of the interview, but Talarico’s previous rhetoric turned a matter of elementary biology into an uncomfortable campaign moment.

Talarico conceded that his earlier statements had failed him.

“I’ve missed the mark on some of my past statements,” he admitted, offering the sort of campaign season cleanup politicians deploy when yesterday’s applause lines become today’s liabilities.

“There are not six sexes,” he also said.

Talarico served in the Texas Legislature, where recorded “votes” provide a clearer picture than carefully rehearsed television language.

Those votes do not disappear merely because a candidate has discovered a more convenient message.

They show what a politician supported when he possessed actual power and was not trying to repair his image before a statewide audience.

That record became especially relevant when the interview addressed the “controversy” involving biological males competing in girls sports.

Talarico tried to stake out what sounded like a newly moderate position, saying, “I oppose trans athletes playing in girls sports if it endangers safety or fairness,” he claimed.

Conservative talk radio host Dana Loesch promptly challenged that presentation.

She noted that Talarico had loudly opposed and voted against Senate Bill 14 and Senate Bill 15, measures concerning medical procedures for minors and male participation on women’s sports teams, respectively.

Loesch wrote, “Well this isn’t true. Not at all. Talarico very vociferously opposed and voted against both SB 14 and SB 15 which banned surgical mutilation of minors and banned men on women’s sports teams, respectively. He said at the time of his opposition: “Some things are more important than perfectly fair competition in sports.””

That older statement is damaging because it reveals how Talarico weighed the issue when he possessed legislative authority.

Safety and fairness now appear in his Fox News answer, but his prior defense suggested that perfectly fair competition could be sacrificed for progressive ideology.

This is not merely a dispute over clumsy wording. Talarico “missed the mark” with more than his words, because elected officials are judged by what they support, what they oppose, and how they vote when the cameras are not providing a campaign rescue opportunity.

He now faces an elementary credibility problem.

Either his earlier talk about six sexes reflected what he believed then, or his current insistence that there are two reflects a hurried attempt to appeal to a statewide electorate with little patience for ideological games.

Talarico may have entered the interview feeling confident after favorable polling suggested he could compete with Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton.

Polls can encourage risky decisions, especially when a Democrat becomes accustomed to media rooms where the premises are protected and the difficult follow up never arrives.

Fox News offered no such shelter.

The candidate who may have expected a polished introduction instead encountered his own record, and no amount of campaign gloss could reconcile the gap between his new language and the votes that Texas conservatives are certain to remember.

For Talarico, the timing could hardly be worse as November approaches.

A Senate hopeful can survive one awkward interview, but a candidate who appears to reinvent his convictions under pressure risks becoming Texas toast before voters ever reach the ballot box.

The larger lesson is simple.

Democrats can rename radical positions, soften their language, and hope a cooperative press corps moves along, but legislative records remain stubborn things, and Talarico’s record followed him directly into the spotlight he sought.

Texas voters will decide whether this reversal represents growth or convenience.
