Former Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz drew widespread criticism online after posting complaints about vegan cream cheese options at New York City bagel shops and suggesting Mayor Zohran Mamdani should address the issue, as reported by The New York Post.
Lorenz posted the comments Sunday morning on X, comparing New York City bagel shops unfavorably to those in Los Angeles.
“The bagels in LA suck, but all the LA bagel shops at least use cashew-based vegan cream cheese. NYC bagel shops almost never have vegan cc, or they’re using hyper-processed Tofutti [vomiting emoji]. I hope Zohran can remedy this,” Lorenz wrote.

The post quickly spread online, reportedly generating more than 2.5 million views. Lorenz later muted replies to the original thread as criticism mounted across social media.

Another X user reposted a screenshot of Lorenz’s comments and mocked what they viewed as a call for government involvement in private business offerings.
“‘I hope the communist mayor can force bagel shops to serve my vegan slop cream cheese,’” the user wrote.
“Just incredible. It’s like she was created in a lab,” the poster added.
Other users also responded critically to Lorenz’s remarks.

“Leftists want the government to intervene in everything from healthcare to housing to cream cheese. It is so absurd,” one commenter wrote.
Another X user added, “I’m a vegetarian, and this annoys me.”
A separate commenter wrote, “The ‘tolerance, inclusion, compassion and empathy’ crowd is at it again.”
“Everything has to be the way they like it, so we can truly have diversity. They see nothing wrong with this either,” the commenter added.
Lorenz later responded to the criticism, arguing that many people online were overreacting to the original post.
“Right-wingers and reactionary weirdos are all QTing this, taking it so seriously and getting angry at the concept of vegan cream cheese,” Lorenz wrote.
“You guys couldn’t survive 5 minutes inside an Erewhon,” she added, referencing the upscale Los Angeles grocery chain known for premium-priced products.

Lorenz also attempted to suggest that her original comments were intended humorously. The following day, she posted another message in a similar format, this time criticizing Los Angeles bagel shops.
“LA bagel shops need to get with the times. The bagels in NYC aren’t all perfect, but the NYC bagel shops at least use standard everything bagel seasoning,” Lorenz wrote Monday morning.
“LA bagel shops are putting stuff like chia seeds on their everything bagels [vomiting emoji]. I hope Nithya, Bass, or Pratt can remedy this,” she added, referring to Los Angeles political figures.
Later, Lorenz posted a photo of herself holding a bagel with vegan cream cheese. Replies to that thread were also disabled.
The exchange generated widespread reactions online as users debated vegan food options, politics, and whether city officials should weigh in on private business offerings at local restaurants and bagel shops.
