Our own Kerry Slone talks a lot about gun ownership for women on social media. She’s a prime example of how the Second Amendment benefits women, even as anti-gunners try to denigrate that need at every turn to make it easier to push women into embracing gun control. They need women disarmed and afraid.

And fear is a terrible thing to wish on almost anyone.

But a story out of Vancouver, WA, illustrates a lot of why gun rights should matter to women.

A female homeowner in Vancouver, Washington, noticed the security alarm about 9 p.m. recently. This thief had a very busy and destructive evening.

The female homeowner noticed that a stranger had entered her home, and she saw him take an expensive bicycle. She chased after the thief, who turned and threatened her with a knife. The homeowner drew her gun and told the thief to get down on the ground. He complied.

Some news stories say that other neighbors were present at this time. It isn’t clear who called police or when that call was made.

Police arrested 31-year-old Josue Paredes Merino. Videos show him riding a bicycle and setting three fires that afternoon. One of the fires destroyed a retail furniture business. Fortunately, the people inside the store were able to escape the building when the fire alarms sounded. That fire spread and also destroyed nearby train cars that were owned by a nonprofit railroad association. They gave train rides along the valley on the weekends.

As my friend Rob Morse reports, a man of the same name has a prior conviction for possession of a stolen vehicle. He’s now sitting in jail with a three-quarters of a million dollar bond.

This was at the end of a violent rampage where, thankfully, it doesn’t seem anyone was hurt, but this was a hot burglary followed by a threat with a deadly weapon. She pulled a gun and ended the threat.

Some like to pretend that using a gun against a knife threat is weak, but a knife is a deadly weapon. Moreover, you’re expecting a woman who, so far as we know, is an average woman physically, and have her get into a grappling match with an armed 31-year-old man? Do they breathe oxygen on your home world, or just stupidity?

Now, some will say she shouldn’t have chased the bike thief, but the truth of the matter is that the police would be unlikely to recover the stolen bike. They hear of a ton of bike thefts every day, and few are ever returned to the owner. Plus, I can’t cast any shade on this since I’ve chased a bike thief myself and only stopped when I realized that I had no idea what I’d do with him if I caught him, especially since he dropped the bike almost immediately.

Anywho, let’s get beyond my own stupidity in the past and focus on why her actions weren’t. The guy still had the bike, for one thing, and then he turned and threatened her.

The average woman is in no position to take on the average man in a physical altercation. Sure, a competitive MMA fighter who is in peak physical condition taking on a pudgy guy threatening her might be different, but the term “might” is the operative one here, because she also might not be wise to take him on.

Put a gun in her hands, and there’s no guy too big and bad to deal with small projectiles moving at a high rate of speed, making a sudden impact with their torso.

That’s an attitude adjustment in a handy, travel-sized container, and for women, it’s literally the best option for almost every violent encounter that doesn’t involve scrapping with another woman.

And even then, sometimes…
