Giffords Announces Million Spending Spree Attacking Pro-Gun Candidates

The gun control group Giffords is opening up its pocket book and spending big to help boost the campaigns of several anti-gun candidates.

You might not see any Giffords ad promoting candidates like Abdul El-Sayed, though. According to Semafor’s Burgess Everett, the group will be attacking pro-Second Amendment candidates rather than lauding the candidates Giffords has endorsed. And while Giffords has announced several of their targets, there’s at least one curious omission.

The group, Giffords, is spending $1 million against former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers in the Senate race in Michigan, $850,000 in an initial buy against Rep. Jen Kiggans, R-Va., and $350,000 against Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J. The group is planning to run ads in four additional House races.

The ads knock the GOP candidates as soft on gun crime and warm to the gun industry. The Rogers ad shows headlines of a mass shooting in Michigan and says “Rogers took over $100,000 from the gun lobby and sided with them over our safety.” The Kiggans spot features a retired police officer who says Kiggans “claims to back the blue and then votes against tougher gun laws,” and tags Kean as “putting our police in danger.”

As FPC’s Rob Romano pointed out on X, the gun control lobby’s math doesn’t make much sense.

If $100,000 from the gun lobby was what made Rogers pro-gun, why doesn’t Giffords save $800,000 by simply giving him $200,000 to be anti-gun? https://t.co/FMXGPpnosi

Giffords’ own polling found Republicans with a sizable advantage over Democrats on issues of crime and public safety, which they’re hoping to blunt with claims that votes in support of the Second Amendment make us less safe.

The big problem with that, of course, is that homicide rates are the lowest they’ve been since at least 1950, and are likely the lowest in over a century. Violent crime overall is trending down across the country as well. More guns hasn’t led to more crime. Quite the opposite, actually.

Still, if you live in one of the places where Giffords is spending big, expect to see and hear a lot of attack ads claiming that the Republican candidate is making it easier for “dangerous people” to get a gun because they’re just pawns of the big, bad, gun lobby.

The GOP’s argument is simple: crime is plummeting, not because of any new gun laws, but because we’re actually targeting violent offenders. Giffords is attacking these candidates because they refuse to criminalize lawful gun owners, but if the Giffords-backed candidates win in November, it will be law-abiding Americans who pay the price.

In addition to targeting Rogers, Kiggans, and Kean, Semafor reports that Giffords will also be going after four other Republican House candidates. Will Brandon Herrera be one of them? We’ve seen several hit pieces aimed at Herrera from the likes of CNN and the New York Times, as well as the DCCC putting TX-23 on the list of their targeted districts, but so far the gun control lobby has mostly been providing moral support to Democrat Katy Padilla Stout instead of writing her campaign a check or engaging in outside spending.

Giffords Executive Director Emma Brown showed up in person to announce the group’s endorsement of Stout back in June, but the latest filings from the FEC show the group has donated just $1,000 to her campaign.

Will TX-23 be one of Giffords remaining targets? Everett reports that Giffords is taking a “Moneyball” approach to the midterms, working with the Democratic firm Global Strategy Group “to determine where it could have the biggest impact.” If Giffords doesn’t include TX-23 in the four other House races where they plan on being engaged, that would be a clear indication that they don’t see flipping the seat as a real possibility.

Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their extreme gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
