I’m not a big fan of reality television, and I haven’t seen a single second of the show The Hills, so I had no real idea how shocking Spencer Pratt’s campaign to become the next mayor Los Angeles really is. I guess it’s kind of like Snookie being a frontrunner to become New Jersey governor, or Honey BooBoo being a favorite for mayor of Hogwaller Hollow or wherever she’s from.

If I lived in L.A. I have no doubt that Pratt would be my choice for mayor, if only because he sounds like the most rational and reasonable person running for that position. The fact that he understands the importance of the right to keep and bear arms doesn’t hurt, though.

In an interview with CNN this week, Pratt revealed that it was his desire to protect himself and his family that led to him becoming a Republican, even if he’s not exactly a rock-ribbed conservative.

PRATT: It’s in my — I’ve told this story before. This is the only time I’ve ever said this so this is breaking news. Everyone’s gonna freak out. When I was a hated reality star, I got so many death threats. I had so much security and police and what did they tell me to do? Get a gun. This is real. I know people don’t like guns, but LA was dangerous if you’re hated. So I got a gun. My wife got a gun, and then we needed CCWs.

MICHAELSON [NARRATING]: A CCW is a legal permit to carry a concealed weapon in California.

PRATT: The only people that supported a CCW was the Republican. That was what I aligned with. My safety, my personal safety, my family’s safety. I know people don’t like guns, but when people are threatening your life and your own security is telling you, you need to have home protection, train to — it’s not like just I went to the — you know, go through the proper steps. That was my, that’s it.

MICHAELSON: That was it? And you felt like that party was more pro-Second Amendment?

PRATT: And I know that’s very hot button, but here’s the thing. I’m also going to be the mayor that puts LAPD in front of every school to make schools safe from guns.

“Why are you a Republican?”

I had to look this up, but both The Hills and its sequel The Hills: New Beginnings aired before the Supreme Court struck down “may-issue” carry laws in June, 2022, so presumably Pratt and his wife were two of the few Los Angelenos who were able to acquire a concealed carry permit under the LAPD and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s permitting schemes that required applicants to prove a justifiable need in order to be approved.

Pratt hasn’t made the Second Amendment a big issue in his mayoral campaign. In fact, I don’t think he’s even made it a small issue. And there’s always the possibility that Pratt is a “2A for me, but not for thee” type. I’m not thrilled with his comment about putting the LAPD in front of every school to “make schools safe from guns,” when he himself should know that it’s the person holding the gun that matters, not the inanimate object.

Still, Pratt isn’t shying away from talking about exercising his right to keep and bear arms, even though he knows it’s a “hot button issue” in southern California. That gives me some hope that if he does wind up as L.A.’s next mayor we could see the first administration in decades that isn’t downright hostile to the exercise of our Second Amendment rights.

Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
