Widow of Airman Killed in Iran War Claims She Was Denied Death Benefits

The widow of a U.S. Airman who died during the United States’ ongoing military operations against Iran has claimed to have not received some of the benefits she is entitled to because of his death.

US Air Force Major John “Alex” Klinner died in a crash in Iraq in March when an unspecified incident involving another aircraft occurred while his KC-135 Air Force refueling aircraft was in “friendly” airspace, supporting the war against Iran that began Feb 28 and recently exceeded the six-month mark. The other plane landed safely, U.S. military officials said, and officials began investigating the crash that killed all six crew members aboard.

Surviving spouses of Air Force service members receive federal benefits. If death occurs on active duty, the spouse receives an immediate, tax-free $100,000 Death Gratuity. They also receive ongoing monthly income including Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for service-connected deaths and lifetime annuities through the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP).

Spouses retain lifelong TRICARE healthcare coverage and base privileges, including commissary and exchange access. Additionally, the government provides up to 365 days of housing allowance (BAH) and tuition assistance via the Fry Scholarship.

Kinner’s widow, Libby Klinner, posted on Instagram this past Saturday that she had not received some of these benefits. She did not specify which benefits she referred to specifically.

“The Air Force recently told me that because we haven’t officially declared war, my kids and I aren’t eligible for some benefits,” she wrote.

“So, not only was my husband killed in a war he never wanted to participate in, but now the benefits we’re left with are being dictated by semantics and public perception,” she added.

Military.com has not verified whether her claims are accurate and reached out to the Air Force for further information.

An Air Force spokesperson previously told The Express that officials spoke with Libby Klinner “to ensure she is receiving all eligible benefits she and her family are entitled to, as well as ensure all her questions are fully addressed.”

Klinner added on Tuesday that the director of mortuary affairs had contacted her following her initial Instagram post to audit her benefits.

Who Was John Klinner?

Klinner, 33, had just been promoted to major in January and had been deployed less than a week before the crash, his brother-in-law, James Harill, told the Associated Press.

Klinner graduated from Auburn University and had been in the Air Force for eight years. He was the chief of squadron standards and evaluations at the Birmingham, Ala., air base.

The pilot left behind three small children: 7-month-old twins and a 2-year-old son, according to Harrill. Libby Klinner said the family had just moved into a new home.

Overall, more than 750 Americans have been wounded in the war with Iran, according to the Department of Defense (DOD).

Eighteen service members have died and 757 have been wounded in the war.
