Lauren Boebert Demands They Lose Nonprofit Status [WATCH]

Rep. Lauren Boebert called for renewed scrutiny of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s tax-exempt status, arguing that the organization functions as a political activist group rather than a charitable nonprofit and should face the same level of oversight she says other organizations receive.

Speaking during a recent interview, Boebert said she believes the Internal Revenue Service and Congress should examine whether the Southern Poverty Law Center continues to qualify for its tax-exempt designation.

“If this hasn’t been done already, I believe that it certainly should be, because as you said, this is a political activist group, and they’re very extreme.”

Boebert argued that many donors may believe they are supporting efforts to reduce hatred and promote unity but instead are funding activities she believes have the opposite effect.

“When donors are thinking that they are contributing to bring unity and peace and fight hate, but the folks that they are giving the money to are only agitating that hate and division.”

According to Boebert, those concerns warrant a review of the organization’s nonprofit status.

“Like I said, this is something that we should be looking into, looking at their tax status.”

She compared the situation to restrictions she said have historically applied to churches and religious leaders that become involved in political activity.

“I mean, certainly, if this was a pastor at a pulpit just a couple of years ago that was talking political or endorsing candidates, they would have been in threat of losing their tax status with the IRS.”

Boebert argued that similar standards should apply when evaluating politically active nonprofit organizations.

“And so, I think that this is something that certainly should be looked into, and if it’s not already, then I do believe that Congress needs to act and and send more referrals.”

In addition to discussing the Southern Poverty Law Center, Boebert praised Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Department of Justice for what she described as ongoing efforts to pursue accountability in criminal investigations.

“But I think that Todd Blanche is doing an amazing job at the DOJ, bringing forward these charges.”

Boebert said she frequently hears calls for accountability while traveling throughout the country.

“Everywhere I go, people want to see justice, they want to see accountability, they want more people held to account for the wrong that they have caused throughout this country.”

She also referenced what she believes are the financial consequences of misconduct by individuals under investigation.

“The lives that they have ruined, and of course, the money and dollars that have been wasted from their actions.”

Boebert said she supports the Justice Department’s efforts and expressed her willingness to work alongside federal officials.

“So Attorney General Todd Blanche is doing an amazing job, and we’ll do whatever we can to partner alongside of him to bring justice.”

Throughout her remarks, Boebert argued that nonprofit organizations engaged in political activity should be subject to appropriate oversight and that Congress should take additional action if existing reviews have not already been initiated.

She maintained that examining the Southern Poverty Law Center’s tax-exempt status would be consistent with standards she believes have been applied to other organizations in the past.

Boebert also emphasized that accountability remains a priority for many Americans, arguing that the Department of Justice should continue pursuing investigations and legal action where warranted.

She said she believes Congress and the Justice Department should work together to ensure individuals responsible for wrongdoing are held accountable under the law, while reiterating her support for Attorney General Todd Blanche’s leadership and the department’s ongoing efforts to pursue justice.
