WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani opened a three day Urban 20 Summit focused on housing costs, climate change and migration.
  • Most Saturday activities were closed to the press, while locations for the summit, private meetings and a wastewater treatment plant visit remained undisclosed.
  • The gathering was expected to include 25 mayors and other leaders representing 34 cities worldwide.
  • Los Angeles cohosted the event, with Dilpreet Sidhu and Mamdani serving as cochairs.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani welcomed left-wing leaders from around the world Saturday as he opened a three-day Urban 20 Summit devoted to progressive priorities.

Climate change, housing costs and migration were placed at the center of the gathering.

Mamdani delivered the opening remarks in New York City, starting a summit designed to feature panels, conversations and plenary sessions among mayors and other officials.

The event brought the socialist mayor together with international leaders who share pieces of his far left agenda.

A press statement released by Mamdani’s media team said attendees would discuss “practical solutions” addressing “rising housing costs, the climate crisis and migration.”

The carefully packaged language offered a broad outline of the summit while leaving many details hidden from public view.

Information about Saturday’s program was scarce and released in Soviet style.

Most of the day’s activities were closed to the press, keeping New Yorkers largely outside a summit hosted in their own city.

Only select media outlets were permitted to attend Mamdani’s opening remarks, and The Post was not among them.

The location of the gathering was also not disclosed, adding another layer of secrecy to the global progressive event.

The mayor’s schedule said he planned to visit an undisclosed wastewater treatment plant alongside Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazanov, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

Approved footage from the visit was expected to become available later in the day.

Mamdani’s published schedule also listed private meetings with Collboni and Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema.

Those conversations were planned for undisclosed locations, continuing the administration’s tightly controlled approach to the summit.

During his opening remarks, Mamdani welcomed both foreign and domestic leaders to the Big Apple.

He claimed the officials shared goals that included making cities more affordable and confronting what he called “the growing impact of the climate crisis.”

Mamdani also turned his attention toward political opponents on the right.

He accused right-wingers of making it their mission to demonize and terrorize immigrants, bringing an unmistakably political edge to his welcome for the assembled officials.

“As we hold panels, conversations and plenary sessions, my sincere hope is that this conference marks only the beginning of a new era of cooperation and emulation,” Mamdani said.

His remarks made clear that he wanted the gathering to produce continued coordination among the participating cities.

The mayor later posted footage of his remarks on social media.

That public release came as most of Saturday’s activities remained unavailable to the broader press, with access limited to media selected for the occasion.

In total, 25 mayors and other leaders representing 34 cities around the world were expected to attend the three-day summit.

The scale gave Mamdani a sizable international audience for his preferred policy themes.

Los Angeles joined the Mamdani administration as a cohost of the New York City event.

Los Angeles Deputy Mayor of International Affairs Dilpreet Sidhu also addressed the visiting leaders and served with Mamdani as a cochair of the summit.

Pramono Anung, the governor of Jakarta, Indonesia, was also reportedly attending the U20 gathering.

Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada was listed among the other international officials taking part.

The summit combined broad progressive ambitions with limited public access, undisclosed meeting sites, and approved footage promised after events occurred.

Mamdani welcomed global cooperation from the stage, but ordinary New Yorkers and much of the press were left with a managed view of what was happening.
