WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • More than 457,000 veterans will receive three months without Veterans’ Group Life Insurance premium payments.
  • The relief begins in November, continues through January 2027 and is expected to save veterans nearly $150 million.
  • Eligible veterans with current policies will receive the exemption automatically and need not take action.
  • Veterans who paid in advance can receive three months of policy credit or request refunds.

More than 457,000 veterans enrolled in the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance program will receive a welcome three month break from monthly premiums. The relief arrives around the holidays and requires no action from eligible policyholders.

Beginning in November, eligible veterans will not have to make premium payments for three months. The payment break will continue through January 2027, according to an announcement from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Officials estimate that the premium holiday will save participating veterans nearly $150 million in insurance payments. That substantial relief will allow the men and women who served to keep money they otherwise would have sent toward monthly premiums.

Veterans generally pay about $110 per month on average for Veterans’ Group Life Insurance coverage. Actual premiums vary depending on the policyholder’s circumstances, and the rates increase every five years as participating veterans grow older.

At the lower end of the range, premiums can cost $30 per month for the maximum $500,000 in insurance coverage. Veterans who are 80 or older can pay as much as $2,200 per month for that maximum coverage.

Every veteran with an eligible Veterans’ Group Life Insurance policy can receive the temporary premium exemption. The policy must remain current and cannot have lapsed or been canceled because of a failure to pay premiums.

Eligible veterans will not need to submit a request or take any other action to obtain the relief. The Department of Veterans Affairs will automatically exempt qualifying policyholders from the three monthly payments.

The automatic process matters because participating veterans use several methods to cover their regular premiums. Many have payments taken through an allotment from military retired pay, while others use withdrawals directly from their bank accounts.

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to notify eligible veterans by letter or email within the coming weeks. Those notices will tell veterans whether they qualify for the three month premium holiday.

Some policyholders have already paid their insurance premiums in advance. Officials said those veterans can receive three months of credit on their policies or request refunds for the applicable payments.

The temporary payment break was made possible by the financial condition of the insurance program. Officials described the program’s financial performance as “incredibly strong,” providing the basis for nearly $150 million in projected savings for veterans.

VA Secretary Doug Collins framed the initiative as direct financial relief for the people who served the country. The premium holiday combines automatic eligibility for current policies with several months of waived payments.

“VA is all about making life better and more affordable for veterans, and this premium holiday will help the men and women who served this nation keep more of their hard-earned money,” Collins said in the announcement about the initiative.

For veterans who normally pay the average monthly premium of about $110, the pause eliminates three scheduled payments. Those with different premium amounts will receive the same three month exemption as long as their policies meet the eligibility requirements.

The relief applies specifically to veterans participating in the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance program with current policies. A policy that has lapsed or has been canceled for nonpayment does not qualify under the conditions announced by officials.

With automatic exemptions, advance payment options and notifications on the way, eligible veterans can expect the process to move without additional action. The premium holiday runs from November through January 2027 and delivers relief during a period when household budgets can feel the pressure.
