Platner, Mamdani, Talarico, and Now AOC: Scratch a Commie, Find a Mommy

Are voters sensing a pattern on the Left these days? Not just of radicalism, but also of radicals having histories of mooching off of over-indulgent parents?

The Crimson Hub discovered Patient Zero in this leftist malaise. Caleb Howe tracked down public records for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her Bronx condo. Even as she ran for Congress and took a salary paid by campaign supporters, guess who fronted AOC’s property-tax bill?

But a review of public records undertaken by the Crimson Hub shows that even when Ocasio-Cortez was taking a salary from her campaign during the 2018 cycle when she was first elected to Congress, property tax bills for the condo AOC occupied in the Bronx were not being billed to the soon-to-be congresswoman. 

In fact, those bills were being sent to the celebrity politician’s mother, who remained legally responsible for them. That indicates that even while paying herself out of campaign donors’ money, AOC was relying on the bank of Mom to cover her costs.

At the time of her first campaign, AOC was close to thirty—despite becoming the youngest-ever female Member of Congress when sworn into office in 2019. 

But throughout the period, property taxes on the Bronx condo were being sent to her mother, who—like many New Yorkers since—had relocated to Florida. Now, as then, AOC’s mother lives in a house that could charitably be described as “modest” in Eustis.

It wasn’t just that AOC’s mother got stuck with the legal responsibility to pay her property taxes. Caleb goes on to report that those taxes went unpaid for years, resulting in a tax lien at one point before her run for Congress. The same property had another lien applied for non-payment of condo fees in 2019, after AOC won her election. 

The most amusing twist in the story? Ocasio-Cortez no longer lives in the condo, but her brother does. And guess how that’s working out?

The Bronx condo she lived in during her congressional campaign instead appears to now be occupied by her brother, Gabriel. The tax bills for the apartment continue to be sent to the Ocasio-Cortez siblings’ mother, not Gabriel, who is in his early thirties.

Like his sister, Gabriel is an avowed anti-capitalist who founded an arts organization “supporting the deaf queer community.”

Let’s stipulate up front that no requirement exists for radical socialists to mooch off their parents. However, it certainly correlates strongly, and for good reason. Radical socialists resent employment in the free market as well as paying bills, which is actually an agenda item on the Democratic Socialists of America platform. Like any communist platform, the DSA wants to seize all property and means of production to then ration goods and services from an authoritarian central-planning government:

Speaking of bills: you don’t really have them anymore.

You have no debt. You don’t need health insurance. You don’t pay a mortgage or have a landlord, because comfortable housing is a human right. Your retirement is publicly funded. Food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation aren’t for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities. …

A socialist day off could be like any good day now. But what if you were free to spend your time how you like without worrying about cost or dreading going back to work? What if you didn’t have to think about paying rent or loans at the end of the month, or saving for college, or affording groceries?

What would that be like?

Ask AOC and her brother! Or, better yet, ask the tens of millions of victims who suffered under socialist systems that replaced the Bank of Mommy with a commie state. If they had survived Mao, Stalin, the Kims, and others, you’d probably get a very clear picture of what that’s like, but many millions more in Eastern Europe can attest to how the DSA’s program works out in reality. 

As I noted to start, though, parental mooching seems to be a connecting thread among leading Democratic Socialists and their allies:

• Graham Platner got sold by DSA activists as an “oysterman” and a working-class stiff. It turned out that Der Oysterführer lives in a house paid for by his dad, and that the only customer for his oyster farm is his mother’s restaurant. He went to tony private schools and has not worked full time since leaving the military, despite being middle-aged. 
• James Talarico’s required financial disclosure revealed that he still shares a checking account with his mother, who supports herself and presumably her son … at 37 years of age. This is clearly not for his mother’s benefit; not only does she still work, but her husband (Talarico’s father) has comfortably retired from a long career as a senior sales engineer for a Texas firm. 
• Zohran Mamdani tried to become a rap singer while working for his mother on a film. He then went into political organizing, joined the DSA, did work as a “housing counselor” for a while before running for the state legislature in 2019. He bragged last year that he stopped working entirely “because I knew if I ran out of my savings, my family would be able to support me.”

That prompted Kirsten Fleming to highlight the correlation between radical socialists and their connection to Other People’s Money:

Socialists are used to mooching off the labor of others, and now they want to set up a system where they can control all of the OPM. That’s not a coincidence. Scratch a commie, find a mommy.
