Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing renewed scrutiny after comments he made earlier this year about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents resurfaced, just months after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, prompting him to suspend his campaign for California governor, as reported by The New York Post.

Swalwell, 45, made the remarks during a January appearance on “The Briefing with Jen Psaki” on MS NOW, where he outlined how he would handle ICE enforcement if elected governor.

During the interview, he criticized federal agents and proposed policy changes targeting their conduct.

Washington, DC – July 28, 2022: Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) speaks at a news conference at the U.S Capital calling for the immediate release of Asim Khafoor who was arrested and jailed in the UAE.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“If you’re going to run around our state masked and not showing yourself, not showing ID, and terrorize women, then you should not have a driver’s license,” Swalwell said.

He expanded on the proposal, stating, “The governor has the power to grant driver’s licenses in any state — and I call it ‘Reveal to Wheel’ — if you’re going into our communities in a way no other law enforcement agency does, masked, and as I said a terrorizing bandit that women are afraid of, then the governor should revoke your driver license and really go on offense and restrict your ability to harm people.”

The comments have drawn attention again following allegations made against Swalwell by multiple women.

Four individuals have accused the congressman of sexual misconduct, including one former staffer who alleged he raped her during a 2024 incident in New York.

The woman described the alleged encounter in an interview, stating, “I was pushing him off of me, saying no. He didn’t stop.”

She said she later sought medical testing for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and claimed she had sent messages to a friend about the alleged incident.

The accusation prompted an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Another woman alleged that in 2019 she woke up next to Swalwell in a hotel room after a night of drinking, claiming he kissed her and touched her leg without consent.

A third accuser, social media influencer Ally Sammarco, said Swalwell sent her explicit images on Snapchat after they began communicating about politics on X.

Swalwell has denied the allegations.

Two days after the claims became public, he announced he was suspending his campaign for governor and issued an apology to his family and supporters for what he described as “mistakes in judgment.”

In addition to the allegations, Swalwell has faced questions regarding financial practices tied to his campaign. State records indicated he used campaign funds to cover childcare expenses during his run for governor.

Despite the mounting controversy, Swalwell dismissed the allegations as politically motivated attacks.

Reaction to the accusations has come from both political parties.

Some lawmakers have called for further action, including pressure for him to resign from Congress, although he had already stepped away from his seat to pursue the gubernatorial campaign.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed the situation shortly before Swalwell suspended his campaign.

Turlock, CA – January 6, 2025: California Governor Gavin Newsom speaks at a press conference about the California Jobs First initiative and the budget outline for the upcoming fiscal year.

“As we continue to learn more, these allegations from multiple sources are deeply troubling and must be taken seriously,” Newsom said.

The resurfacing of Swalwell’s earlier remarks on ICE, combined with the allegations against him, has intensified scrutiny of his public statements and political future as investigations and responses continue.
