San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police security detail was attacked Thursday evening near the edge of the Tenderloin, leaving one officer bleeding after a chaotic confrontation in one of the city’s most troubled neighborhoods, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near Cedar Street, according to Mission Local. Authorities said the mayor was not injured during the confrontation.

At the time of the incident, Lurie was traveling in a black SUV with two members of his security detail — one officer riding with him and another officer driving the vehicle.

According to the injured officer’s account to responding police, the vehicle was blocked in the street by three individuals.

Lurie exited the SUV and asked the group to move out of the way, the officer told investigators. Initially, the individuals appeared to comply with the request.

The situation quickly escalated, however, when one of the men began acting erratically.

The officer told responding police the man started “talking gibberish.” When the officer stepped in and ordered the man to move along, the suspect initially backed away.

Moments later, the man allegedly turned and rushed toward the officer.

The officer grabbed the man’s upper body as the two struggled. During the scuffle, both fell to the ground.

The officer fell backward and struck his head on the pavement, leaving him bleeding from the back of his head.

While that struggle unfolded, the second officer — who had been driving the SUV — confronted another man at the scene.

That officer did not appear to suffer injuries. Police said it remains unclear whether the second suspect assaulted anyone during the confrontation, and the role of a third individual mentioned by police has not been fully clarified.

The suspected attacker involved in the scuffle was taken into custody at the scene.

According to reports, the man repeatedly shouted “F–k you!” while officers placed him in handcuffs.

A second suspect attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police a short distance away.

More than a dozen officers soon responded to the block near Cedar and Polk streets, surrounding the suspects as they lay in handcuffs on the ground.

Following the confrontation, Lurie remained at the scene and observed the aftermath. Witnesses reported that the mayor appeared shaken by the incident.

Lurie later told Mission Local that the individuals had attempted to fight one of the police officers assigned to his security detail, but declined to provide additional details.

The San Francisco Police Department confirmed that officers responded to the area of Cedar and Polk streets at approximately 5:38 p.m.

In a statement, police said two men were arrested following the incident. Authorities also confirmed that two officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail suffered injuries, though those injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, praised the officers involved in the incident.

“We’re grateful the officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted swiftly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unpredictable situation,” Wong said.

“We wish our injured officer a full and speedy recovery and commend all involved for their bravery and decisive actions.”

The investigation into the confrontation remains ongoing.
