Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner announced the death of his daughter at the age of 36.

Warner’s daughter, Madison, died from long-term complications with juvenile diabetes and other health issues, according to a statement posted by the senator.

“We are heartbroken beyond words by the passing of our beloved daughter, Madison, 36, after a decades-long battle with juvenile diabetes and other health issues,” Warner said in a statement on X. “She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void. We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we navigate this profound loss.”

Madison suffered from Type 1 diabetes, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects more than 1.7 million Americans, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Complications such as heart or kidney disease, neuropathy and stroke can arise as a result of the condition. The disease requires lifelong insulin therapy and blood sugar monitoring because it causes a lack of insulin production in the body.

Warner and his wife, Lisa, share two other daughters, Eliza and Gillian. He has served in the U.S. Senate since Jan. 6, 2009, and is seeking reelection to a fourth term in November.
