A mayor in southern Mexico took part in a centuries-old cultural tradition by participating in a ceremonial marriage with a reptile dressed in a wedding gown, a ritual local residents believe brings prosperity and unity to their community, as reported by Fox News.

Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, participated in the ceremony on June 30, 2023, joining a 7-year-old caiman in a symbolic marriage that has been celebrated in the town for approximately 230 years.

According to reports, the annual ritual commemorates a historic truce between the indigenous Chontal and Huave communities. Local tradition holds that the ceremony helps bring abundance, good fortune, and harmony to the region.

Following the ceremony, Sosa explained the symbolic significance of the event while speaking with reporters.

“I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important,” Sosa said after the marriage ceremony.

“You can’t have a marriage without love… I yield to marriage with the princess girl.”

Before the ceremony began, residents dressed the female caiman in colorful clothing and carried her throughout the town. Community members held the reptile while participating in traditional dances as part of the celebration.

The caiman, a reptile native to Central America, was later dressed in a white bridal gown before the formal ceremony at the town hall.

During the ritual, Sosa symbolically represented a Chontal king, while the reptile represented a Huave princess.

The ceremony serves as a symbolic union between the two indigenous groups and has become one of the community’s most recognizable annual traditions.

Photographs from the event showed Sosa kissing the reptile on the head during the ceremony. Reports noted that the animal’s mouth had been tied shut to prevent it from biting during the festivities.

After the symbolic marriage concluded, residents continued the celebration by dancing with the reptile while traditional music played throughout the town.

The ceremony has become a longstanding cultural event that attracts attention beyond the region because of its unique customs and historical significance.

Local residents have continued observing the tradition for generations, viewing it as a celebration of peace between the indigenous communities and a ceremony intended to promote prosperity.

Sosa emphasized that the event represents more than an unusual spectacle, describing it as a celebration of the community’s shared heritage.

“We are happy because we celebrate the union of two cultures,” Sosa said. “People are content.”

The annual ceremony in San Pedro Huamelula remains one of Oaxaca’s best-known cultural traditions, preserving customs that local residents say date back more than two centuries.

Although the ritual often draws international attention because of the symbolic marriage between the mayor and the reptile, community members regard the event primarily as an important cultural observance celebrating the relationship between the Chontal and Huave peoples.

Residents once again gathered throughout the town to participate in the procession, traditional dances, music, and ceremonial activities that have become central to the annual event.

The symbolic marriage continues to be observed as part of the town’s longstanding traditions, with local leaders and residents treating it as an expression of cultural identity and a reminder of the historic peace established between the two indigenous communities.
