Why Would Anybody in a Swing District Say This?

Tom Suozzi is a House member from what is most certainly a swing district on Long Island, New York. The Third Congressional District has swung back and forth over the past eight years, and Suozzi has both won and lost the seat. He sits in the House today because he won the seat again after George Santos was unceremoniously booted from the House. 

By any modern measure (which isn’t saying much), he’s a moderate. He is the Democrat Co-Chair of the Problem Solvers’ Caucus, voted for the Laken Riley Act, and even urged Democrats to work with Donald Trump, which is about what you would expect from a Congressman from a district teetering on the edge.

In an undated clip shared by the RNC, Suozzi made the startling claim that his #1 priority is legalizing millions of illegal aliens, and by extension putting them on the path to permanent residency and/or citizenship. 

He’s made similar pitches in the past, but this appears to be his most definitive statement that this is at the top of his priority list. 

That’s a very odd pitch, although it’s not odd at all that the RNC is prominently featuring it. Suozzi’s seat is considered one of the most vulnerable for Democrats this year, and winning it could be a bright spot for Republicans in what looks like a pretty bleak year. 

Trump’s super PAC is betting big on the race, though everything associated with Trump is big, and MAGA PACs have a ton of money. 

A Trump-aligned Super PAC is spending nearly $8 million to help Republican challenger Mike LiPetri in his bid to topple Long Island Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, sources told The Post.

The No Going Back PAC has bought $5.7 million in TV ads over a three-week period, according to a review of TV ad buying from both Democratic and Republican sources.

“Tom Suozzi voted against banning congressional insider trading because he’s made over $10 million dollars trading stocks in Washington,” the 30-second anti-Suozzi TV advertisement claims.

“Tom Suozzi serves himself. Mike LiPetri will serve New York by banning politicians from insider trading and holding Congress accountable,” the ad says.

No Going Back is an offshoot of the Trump Super PAC Make America Great Again or MAGA Inc.

Republicans have a lot of money, but not many opportunities to take out Democrats; most of it will be used to defend seats, not go on the offense. 

The group is spending another $2 million in direct mail targeting households in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, which spans Nassau County’s North Shore and parts of Queens and Suffolk counties, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission.

In total, Republicans are spending nearly $8.5 million on TV ads targeting Suozzi when including ads paid for by the Congressional Leadership Fund/House GOP political action committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the LiPetri campaign, the Suozzi camp said.

As many observers have noted, contemporary politics tends to create a bimodal curve in Congress’s ideological representation. Rather than representatives clustering around the middle, representatives tend to gravitate to one pole or the other for a simple reason: moderates are the easiest to take out in years when the winds blow against a party. Suozzi has to keep his Democrat base happy but still appeal to the center. 

That’s difficult these days, especially on the Democrat side. But the same phenomenon exists on both sides of the aisle.

It’s hard to know whether Suozzi was making a pitch to his base, to business leaders who like cheap labor, or just loves immigrants, including illegal aliens. He doesn’t present himself as an open-borders guy, but the position he took here is equivalent to that. If you want a secure border but also want to immunize anybody who makes it in, the incentives remain to break the law. 

It’s hard to say how the issue will play out in this election; immigration is less salient than in 2024, and the Left is more energized on the issue. 

But it’s hard to imagine the average swing voter, who may squirm at ICE tactics, wanting the pendulum to go back to Biden-era policies.
