Gun Range Removes Flock Cameras Pointed at Entrance to Parking Lot

A gun range in the suburbs of has taken down Flock cameras that were installed more than six months ago, after a video showing the cameras and questioning why they were there went viral.

The video, posted on X last week, has been viewed more than 600,000 times, and irate responses from gun owners and customers led to Eagle Sports Range’s decision to remove the cameras from its property.

American is going to the gun range and she gets into the parking lot and notices something concerning

There are 4 Flock cameras “pointing into the entrance of the parking lot. Not the street — into the entrance, so they can read every license plate that comes in here”

According to a note posted on the range’s infrequently used Facebook page, the decision to allow Flock to install their cameras came after a string of burglaries at several Milwaukee-area gun shops.

The range went on to note that it had “no idea the system would later be used in ways that cause serious privacy concerns,” and tried to remove the cameras in February of this year.

According to Eagle Sports Range, the surveillance company denied the request to take down the cameras, citing a contractual obligation to keep them in place. Still, the range now says the “took every Flock camera down” and will “deal with Flock and the contract on our own time,” adding that “for now, the cameras are gone.”

Better late than never, but if I were a customer at Eagle Sports I’d still like management to explain why they decided to allow a third-party to put up multiple cameras to record the business’s parking lot instead of just putting up some security cameras of their own. Eagle Sports says it was oblivious to the fact that the system would “later” be used in ways that raise serious privacy concerns, but unless Eagle Sports Range did absolutely no research into Flock beforehand, management had to know that the cameras would be on 24/7 and recording the movement (and license plates) of every customer and employee.

Eagle Sports Range also posted this on its Facebook post after releasing its statement.

Flock is not foreign owned. It was founded by three Georgia Tech alums in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017. I have no idea where Eagle Sports Range got the idea that it’s an Israeli company, but it’s not true, and management should really take this post down before they get accused of blaming the Jews for their mistake.

This isn’t the first Flock set-up found near a gun store or range. They’ve allegedly been spotted at the entrance and exit of a public gun range in Florida as well as the entrance to the Hernando Sportsmans Club Gun Range. It’s bad enough when these cameras are installed on roadways owned by state or local government, but it’s even worse when these cameras are posted on private property.

I fear that we’re fighting a losing battle against a supercharged surveillance state, but we don’t have aid and abet it. Again, I’m glad Eagle Sports Range has done the right thing and taken down the cameras, though the “for now” in its statement makes me wonder if they’ll return if Flock decides to play hardball about the range’s contractual obligations.
