Today was the final day of jury selection in the Karmelo Anthony trial and while there were some interesting developments, there’s a limit to what we know because the judge will not allow any cameras, phones or other devices into the courtroom. So reporters who were there all day today were not able to live post about what happened. Instead, they had a few moments to tweet during the day and mostly had to save their hand-written notes for the end of the day.
Anyway, here’s what we do know. First, the protesters were out again today.

Inside the courtroom, both sides questioned potential jurors. The defense seemed focused on asking them how they felt about self-defense. Reporter MaryAnn Martinez, who is there for the Daily Mail, noted that the defense question was a bit misleading.

Karmelo Anthony’s attorney Mike Howard (pictured below) keeps repeating to potential jurors that under Texas law, it’s not illegal to have a knife under five and a half inches in a public place. Anthony was armed with a knife the day he killed Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet.
HOWEVER, Karmelo Anthony was not in a public place. The fatal stabbing happened on Frisco ISD property. School-sponsored events are classified as prohibited places for weapons, not public spaces.
The defense also seemed eager to weed out any MAGA voters.
Some potential jurors are refusing to answer.

And it didn’t take long for race to become part of this trial. One juror repeatedly said they wouldn’t feel right putting a “brother” in prison.

And hopefully this potential juror is gone.
“He does look like a child,” adds another woman in the jury pool. “Maybe he can learn something. I’d want him to learn.”

By the end of the day a jury of 12 jurors and 6 alternates had been selected. However, there was some disagreement about who was selected. Martinez reported that the press couldn’t see any members of the jury so they don’t know anything about race or age of those selected.

But Sarah Fields says there were no black jurors selected.

Just because there are no black jurors obviously does not mean there are no minorities on the jury. We’ll see how it looks tomorrow. But for now I can see there are already a lot of people on X who are angry about this outcome.
